The original post about the album on this sub didn’t get a lot of traction so I wonder if that was more common here as opposed to the reception on the r/hiatuskaiyote sub. I’ve listened to this album a number of times now and it still hasn’t really grabbed me. CYW has a ridiculous number of incredible songs so it's hard to beat it in that regard, but if I were to just sit and listen to one of their albums all the way through I'd much rather put on Mood Valiant.
I kinda like Mood Valiant and CYW equally, but maybe in different ways. The only song I specifically don't like is Blood and Marrow. I'm inclined to say it doesn't reach the highs that CYW hits, but that may just be due to sheer quantity - when I really think about it, I absolutely love most of the tracks on Mood Valiant and some of them are absolutely among their very best (I've probably listened to Rose Water a thousand times at this point and I'm still not sick of it.). They have a bunch of really great "signature" HK songs like Chivalry Is Not Dead, Rose Water, All The Words We Don't Say, and Get Sun, and this time around the interludes actually do add something to the album.

They kinda lean into a full trip-hop vibe on Sparkle Tape Break-Up. They have a beautiful piano ballad in Stone or Lavender. And We Go Gentle and Red Room both have a gorgeous, chill neo-soul feel and they actually sit with the lower-key vibe rather than transitioning into something high-energy like a lot of tracks on CYW did. Mood Valiant feels more focused and streamlined while also showing a little more stylistic and emotional variety. Also the interludes add nothing and Prince Minikid (a glorified interlude) shouldn't be on the album.
There are some groovier tracks like Fingerprints, Laputa, and The Lung, but the album never really steps back and gives you reprieve from the energy and all of the songs provide a pretty similar emotional experience, which is awesome when you're going back to individual tracks but bogs you down when you're taking it all in at once.
When you listen all the way through, you really start to notice its length and not in a good way. CYW is one of my all-time favorite albums, but Mood Valiant has sort of opened my eyes to some of its flaws and I now realize that it's an absolutely amazing collection of songs that doesn't 100% come together. I'm really surprised a lot of the reception from a lot of fans has been lukewarm because I absolutely love it and still have it on constant repeat with no sign of stopping.
